Our Story
Three generations of comfort food
What started as a small ice cream parlor on Portland Avenue has grown into one of Tacoma's most cherished neighborhood restaurants.
Anglea's Restaurant is a family-owned American diner at 7511 Portland Ave E in Tacoma, Washington. Since 1947, it has served the community with hearty, home-style cooking in a warm and welcoming atmosphere that regulars describe as stepping back into a classic 1960s diner.
The restaurant is best known for its famous fried chicken and JoJos — a combination that has been on the menu since 1962, still served with the original homemade sour cream dipping sauce. Beyond chicken, the kitchen turns out big breakfasts, comfort-food dinners, homemade cream pies, plate-sized cinnamon rolls, and fresh-baked breads daily.
With booth and table seating, on-site parking, and a staff that includes servers who have worked here for years, every visit feels personal. Whether you're a lifelong local or passing through Pierce County for the first time, you'll find honest food, fair prices, and genuine hospitality.
John and Helen Anglea open a small ice cream parlor on Portland Avenue in Tacoma.
Sandwiches and burgers are added to the menu as the parlor grows into a full restaurant.
Fried chicken & JoJos debut with the original homemade sour cream sauce — still served today.
Curt and Marilyn Heinz purchase the restaurant from Mrs. Anglea and expand to full breakfast, lunch, dinner, and catering.
Lori & John Frazier (Heinz's daughter and son-in-law) take over and continue the family tradition to this day.
